Shentonistas Recommend: Businesses in the CBD

We celebrate National Day this month, though it comes with mixed feelings. Amidst an outbreak of new clusters, discussions about race and deep-seated privilege, the lambasting of national athletes, and concerns about our collective mental health, it seems like the general feeling we’re getting is: is there anything actually worth celebrating?

When organisers first announced that they wanted to go ahead with the Tokyo Olympics, there was much uproar; yet, as the games progressed, we noticed that the mood had shifted. On the surface, perhaps the Olympics were simply a distraction from our day-to-day lethargy, a surreal pause from real life. But it gave people something to cheer for—a reminder of what the human body is capable of; a display of determination, perseverance, and the unyielding human spirit.

Perhaps, in a similar vein, that’s something to be reminded of this National Day. It’s not to say that all the issues that have emerged over the past year and a half should be swept under the carpet. Instead, perhaps this is a call for them to be brought to light, to rekindle faith in our shared humanity—that we can and should be the cause for change; to lift others up instead of bringing them down; to stand together and support each other in any way that we know how.

We didn’t do anything big this year on Shentonista. All we did was ask about local businesses that you felt needed some help during these times, and you responded. As a platform that’s always been about sharing stories, this is our small part to play.
